Therefore, the debt has an implicit cost: to finance itself today with debt, may mean having to give it up in the future. This is related to the formulation of the capital budget according to which the financing of a project has to be studied within the framework of the general and future situation of the company. That is why we speak of the weighted average cost of capital at the time of comparing with the profitability of a project: the project has to be taken into account as integrated into the company and not in isolation. You have to collect all the debts of the company and find the weighted average cost to match. Capital Budget is a tool used to carry out certain cost planning processes for companies, families, businesses, among others, which would produce certain economic benefits with terms stipulated within a year. The capital budget can also be defined as a valued list of projects which may be feasible for the acquisition of new economic benefits, that is to say, for example, when a company makes a capital investment it incurs the current cash outflow and this Expected future benefits, the benefits usually extend for more than a year (Vogt, 2004). Within the Capital budget we can find the following advantages: It supports the development of the procedure and / or purpose. It promotes interaction, communication and help between the areas of the company. They give common sense when making investment proposals. It is possible to fully fund a company with equity funds, which must be equal to the required return on the stockholders' equity of the company, and must consider their cost of capital from various sources of long-term funds (preferred shares or debt In the long term) and not only the stockholders' equity of the company.. The weighted average cost of capital is calculated as a compound value, made up of the various types of funds you will use, regardless of the specific financing for a project. Athletes are good at what they do; they work hard in order to make it in the big leagues. Working hard to get what you want is something to look up to. Though it is they taking advantage of that fame and money they obtain that is questionable towards being a role model. For example Pete Rose bid against his own team, gambling on his game for the other team to win. He is supposed to be someone kids idolize; this is nothing to be proud of. No one wants their child to admire someone who lies and cheats the system while betraying others that trust him. There have been many stories of athletes getting in trouble with the law. Baseball players, for example, are using steroids including star players Barry Bonds, McGwire and Sosa. Is this what mothers really want their little athletes to learn? That it’s okay to do whatever needed in order to get ahead in life? Lying, cheating and hurting themselves on top of breaking the rules in order to succeed in something whether its sports or not isn’t ealthy for anyone to do. High school athletes more and more each year are choosing to follow the professional athlete’s example they have given students. This is creating an all time high for high school students with steroid use. â€Å"A 2004 national survey reported that 3. 5% of high school seniors reported using steroids, an increase from the 2. 1% back in 1991. † (At hletes Shouldn’t Be Role Models). That seniors only, so imagine adding the other grades into the factor. These athletes who live under the influence of the law have a bad influence on these students. Children as well look up to professional athletes as a guide for themselves in the sporting world. Not only do many athletes lie and cheat in the games by using steroids some also cheat the system by breaking the law. There are a few star players that should have a record but because of who they are they get off with a slap on the wrist. For example recently a member of the Bronco’s team was pulled over for speeding. Al Axford, the police officer who pulled him over, said he saw that he was intoxicated while driving and should’ve been sent to the hospital and gotten arrested. He didn’t though because of whom he was to society. A week later he got pulled over again for the same reasons. This time he got let off with a fine. Young athletes should not be taught that if you have a lot of money and are famous you could get away with anything. Another sport star getting off lightly with seriously breaking the law is DeShawn Stevenson. In the year 2001 he raped a 14-year-old girl only getting put on probation. His probation consisted of giving motivational speeches, posing for photographs, and giving autographs. While if it was an everyday citizen they would have â€Å"court-ordered community service which typically involves collecting roadside trash, digging ditches on road crews or cleaning public parks† (Athletes lightly punished after their day in court), and go to jail for sexual assault. It is wrong that because they are â€Å"famous† they don’t have to do the normal punishment. Also children and people in general see that as an opportunity to do the same or try to be an athlete so they can to get away with anything basically with a slap on the wrist merely because of their â€Å"career†. People may argue and say anyone with money can buy out people and probably get away with doing something. The difference between them and these athletes is they aren’t serving as a role model for children they get frowned upon for it. While with athletes no one wants to be the one to mess up the season because of what they do. It is immoral and teaching the children of our society the wrong message about sports figures and how people should act. Children see these athletes as remarkable people because of the fame and wealth they receive by playing a sport well enough to be a professional. When in reality they don’t see that people can live well by having a good education. People need an education in order to survive in life. Professional athletes are the exception to this in a way because of how much money our society has decided to pay them. Some people claim it is undeserved and should be going to underappreciated citizens with actual careers like doctors and teachers. The average salary for professional athletes within the typical American sports is more than the president makes (Professional athletes: role models for good or evil? ). That is simply ridiculous to think that the president of the United States earns less money than our athletes. Many big league players have the audacity to complain about not making enough money for what they do. A lot of these professional athletes lost a lot of respect just as many of the fans have lost respect for them. According to Sandra Longuevan, mother of a youth fencer, professional athletes shouldn’t be idolized at all anymore. Instead she believes that the volunteers in our community because they don’t do it for the fame or money and are good people. These people are genuinely good all around. There aren’t any stories on volunteers having some kind of scandal they have to deal with. While professional athletes do what they do for the money and the name they create for themselves. Which overall doesn’t seem that bad, they have to make a living, right? It is how they misuse what they are given that is corrupting them being considered as a typical role model. They take their â€Å"title† to their advantage. Young athletes are being taught that if they become like those athletes they can be just like them. So many athletes misbehave, yet still it’s as if we are condoning them within the games. For example in hockey some players will get a little more aggressive. Many other sports as well if something doesn’t go their way it could become violent on the court, field or on the ice. â€Å"For some athletes, there’s a lack of impulse control,† said Robert Weinberg, who specializes in sports behavior and performance at Miami University in Ohio. †(ABC news: Is there a double standard for aggressive athletes? ). Is this affecting society’s young athlete? Children seeing their idols getting angry while playing and nothing truly happens to them as punishment have had some kind of toll. These athletes are babied; they throw temper tantrums and end up getting what they want in the end. Mothers do the same to their toddlers; young kids cry and get what they want in order to behave well. It seems as if the professional athletes during a game or not gets that same treatment. Looking at how some child athletes have behaved on the field compared to their parents and the professional athletes it’s a direct correlation to their poor behavior. â€Å"As a teen hockey player from Illinois pleaded guilty †¦.. for giving a rival player a paralyzing injury, youth sports officials say violence among adults at youth events appears to be affecting the kids. It goes with professional athletes as well Children look up to their parents as guides as well as their idols, or sports stars. They see an athlete misbehaving over something and it happens to that child. What are they going to do? Most of the time act on it in a similar way. It is causing a lot of issues with the concept of good sportsmanship. This isn’t something that should be spread any more so then it has. Professional athletes don’t make good role models with their poor behavior and the influence it has on kids. These people only play a sport in front of an audience. It doesn’t even seem to be for the love of the game for most players anymore. Many Professional athletes now play for the lifestyle that comes with it. Children shouldn’t want to be a sports star because of the fame but because they love the game. Athletes today are so misguided by the fortune and fame they seem to forget about the whole reason they are getting paid. Not all of the athletes are this way, but with the scandals going on with all these stars it is hard to tell anymore. It is really sad seeing American sports turn into just another, over advertised way to make money, event that happens a few months out of each year. In a poll fox news did in the year 2007 56% of people said that the bad image of these professional athletes is due to more stories on their poor choices against the law. 27% of the same people who did that poll say that it isn’t that there are more stories on them but there are more crimes and athletes misbehaving. (Fox news athlete’s polls) It seems to be a controversial topic on whether the athletes are actually getting worse as time progresses or if society is now more public about the athlete’s misguided fame. Either way it is sliced professional athletes have a negative effect on society’s views of good role models. American sports fame is merely advertising and money that is made in order to keep these sports going every year. Most of the drama within sports stars seems to stick within the Americanized sports football, basketball, baseball, and hockey sometimes. There are hardly any news stories on soccer players, swimmers, golfers, or any other sport. Michael Phelps most recently was in the news for something illegal. â€Å"He lost a major sponsor, and then he got suspended from competition for three months by USA Swimming, the latest fallout from a photo that showed him inhaling from a marijuana pipe. (Los Angelis Times: Michael Phelps suspended 3 months by USA Swimming). The difference with him and the other sports legacies are he owned up to it and accept whatever punishment he should’ve gotten. He didn’t use his popularity or him being an Olympic swimmer as an excuse to get out of his wrongdoing. Tiger Woods’ also had a couple stories in the papers. He then took that negative limelight and changed made himself a better person. The articles on him were a wakeup call so he changed his ways. Those are people that should be looked up to not people who do crime after crime and misbehave constantly. Professional athlete’s poor decision making being overlooked and ignored isn’t a good thing to be teaching young athletes. Not only the bad behavior but the way they handle themselves when something happens. The lesson it is teaching these children is corrupt and shouldn’t be something to idolize. Athletes shouldn’t be using their professional title as a fall back for their decisions. It shows a bad example for the children. Also there fame seems to be a lost cause when they are no longer playing for the love of the game. What is this showing the children? Being a professional athlete isn’t supposed to be a way out of life. Americanized sports and their players need to clean up their acts in order to be considered true idols for these children. How We Feel Pain Free Online Research Papers If I was boiling a pot of water and reached over to turn the burner off. In doing so, my arm brushes against the hot kettle and I get burned. From the perspective of my nervous system there are several things that take place. Pain is detected in my arm by a nerve cell, or sensory neuron, that carries messages from the senses toward the central nervous system. The central nervous system consists of my brain and spinal cord. When I feel the pain, neurons have been triggered near the soma and cross their threshold. Then it travels from the dendrite and soma, to the branching end of the axon. Axons are made up of fiber and carry messages through my brain and central nervous system. I have about 3 million miles of axons in my brain. The axons in my body branch out into smaller fibers which have bulb-shaped ends, also known as axon terminals. The information is transferred from neuron to neuron by way of these axon terminals because it allows a connection to other neuron’s dendrite and soma. When enough neurons are excited they cross their threshold and create nerve impulses. A nerve impulse occurs when a neuron’s molecules open up and allow ions from another neuron to affect its electric charge b y way of ion channels, or tunnels piercing all the way to the axon membrane. Since I was burned, many neurons suddenly became positively charged which raised the resting potential of the neurons in the place I was burned to action potentials. The potential changes from having a negative electric charge to having a positive electric charge, which creates action potentials, or nerve impulses. When enough neurons become action potentials, a nerve impulse shoots down the axons at a rapid speed. Electrically charged molecules within a neuron, flow in and out of the axon, sending the message that I have been burned throughout my body. Some axons are coated with a fatty layer called myelin. Small gaps in the myelin help nerve impulses move faster. Instead of passing down the entire length of the axon through each neuron, the action potential leaps from gap to gap. An action potential reaches the tips of the axon terminals, and neurotransmitters are released into the synapse. This is the space between neurons where messages are passed. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that alter activity in neurons. What happens when chemical molecules cross over a synapse? A receptor site, or receiving area, on the next neuron senses the neurotransmitters, and either the neuron excites the activity of the neurotransmitters. When enough neurons are excited a neural network within the central nervous system is produced. Our spine is made up of bundles of axons covered with myelin and consists of peripheral nervous system nerves. The spine connects these nerves to the brain. The pain of being burned is detected by a sensory neuron which immediately fires off a message to my spine. Inside my spine, the neuron synapses with a connector neuron which activates a motor neuron and carries the message from the central nervous system to muscles and glands. Muscle fibers are made up of effector cells that make it capable of initiating responses. The muscles then contract and cause me to pull my hand back. This is done without the use of the brain because the pain provoked an automatic response, or reflex arc, within my spinal cord. Human Resource strategies of the Royal Mail in 2005:- One of the most important actions of the Royal Mail can be seen in the beginning of 2005 which employed candidates from the socially excluded groups. New recruits by this process were placed in position as post man, delivery van drivers, letter sorting who were ex-service men or those who are homeless. The Human Resource team played a very important function in sorting out the list of disabled candidates and selecting the best candidates through a standard selection process. The Human Resource Manager who have the Management as an art aspect means having inborn talents will have those skills to recruit those people who can contribute to the maximum of their extend towards their Organization. The Royal mail team supervised by Mr. Adam Crozier made record annual profits in 2005 which helped to give 1074 pounds of bonuses to its workers. These were achieved by the employee performance,better customer service by properly trained staff and their performance related pay strategy of the Human Resource team. Human Resource strategies of the Royal Mail in 2006:- The Human Resource team in the Royal Mail were able to provide instant solutions to the grievances of the employees. The starting of the year 2006 was not as good for the Royal Mail as it faced a postal strike in Belfast. Nearly 200 postal workers stopped their work for 2 weeks which made a very negative impact on the Royal Mails services to the customers. The customers were said to contact the office directly for any important matters and most of the letters and documents were blocked in some places remained undelivered. The Communication Workers Union says that the strike was due to the bad and unfair practices of the managers towards the workers in Belfast and the core issue is not accepted by the Royal Mail. Important delivery including specialized services were stopped temporarily and the management took immediate action to solve the problem. The Workers in strike were assured that they will not be treated badly when they return to their work and necessary actions will be taken against those who were found guilty. The Human Resource team in the Royal Mail took the issue seriously and they guaranteed that the workers will be treated fairly and without any discrimination. The psychological contract which says high motivation and high commitment should be taken into consideration which made the Human Resource Manger to deal with the situation in a friendly and wise manner. It was this year the Royal Mail lost its position as a Monopoly in the postal Industry and started facing wide spread competition. The management agreed that their will be no reduction in the work force, high job security will be provided with raise in pay scales to the staffs. The Christmas season of 2006 also made the customers of the Royal Mail to suffer due to the strike of 800 workers which caused huge volume of undelivered documents in the office. The managements decision to change some full time post to part time when an job opening arise was objected by the trade union by saying tha t it is against the National agreement. The matter was raised very seriously and the Royal Mail responded to it by saying that the decision will be with the consent of the worker agreement. The strike was stopped by reaching to the point that the new job openings in the Royal Mail will be carried out by the management with the combined hands of the trade union to make decision regarding whether to treat the vacancy full time or part time and the management assured that no staff will be forced to change his full time job status to part time. The closing of the sorting office in Paddington, London in the same year was explained by the Royal Mail as a step taken in order to improve their customer satisfaction and productivity against the wide spread rumours about some illegal actions of the postal workers. The 950 workers who worked their were temporarily kept away from their duties and some of them were given transfer offers. The workers commitment in a firm not only depend on their s alary but also on other factors like work atmosphere, employee- employer relationship, colleague character etc. The sacking of 5 workers who treated their women colleague very badly in one of the Royal Mail branch shows the immediate response taken by the Human Resource team in those matters which affects an employee to perform well in an Organization and to reduce those activities which affects the reputation of the firm. The Human Resource team has made recently certain improvements in the health and safety measures for the workers due to the huge fine the firm had to pay regarding the death of an employee, which was made as a health and safety issue by the court. Human Resource strategies of the Royal Mail in 2007:- The Privatization of the Royal Mail was the main problem discussed by the Human Resource team in the Royal Mail and the workers point of trust towards the firm tends to decrease day by day affecting their performance in the work. The Communication Workers Union was opposing the issue but some managers say the Privatization will help the future of the Royal Mail. A deal was agreed between the management and the labour union in 2007 followed by stopping the workers strike. The new policies changed the working time and new technologies were introduced which was implemented in each and every branch of the Royal Mail improved the productivity and performance of the workers. The new modern way of thinking and acting was successful in the Royal Mail. Also Mr. Mark Higson the managing director of the Royal Mail added that the future of the Royal Mail Pension scheme will not form any part of the agreement. The firms like TNT, DHL and many of the online services are serious treats to the Royal Mail. The day when the Royal Mail lost its Monopoly in 2006 marked the beginning of competition as a headache to the Royal Mail. Another problem which the Royal Mail faces is the reduction in the volume of the letters but the postal workers tells that the number is increasing day by day. The Royal Mail like all other firms had undergone a SWOT ANALYSIS to understand its positives and Negatives internally and Externally. The Royal Mail do have new opportunities to identify more customers and Business clients and providing support to them which will have a competitive advantage over its rivals. The Competitors like TNT, DHL, UKMAIL and the possibility of more rivals to enter the Industry forms the main threats for the Royal Mail. The wide usage of internet, online banking, online delivery and e-mailing has reduced its number of customers to a large extend has made huge reduction in the volume of mails in the Royal Mail is also considered as big threats. The Royal Mail still stands as the Standard postal service in the United Kingdom with its valuable staffs and its improved services like First class service, weekend service etc. Royal Mail also provides online supports and International postal services. The Administration of the Royal Mail includes series of committees like The Audit and Risk committee, The Management board, Pensions committee, Remuneration committee, Nomination committee and Social and Responsibility Committee. The new Human Resource Strategy and policies are being Introduced by the Royal Mail in order to face these threats and for the motivation of the workers. 6. The new Human Resource strategy to support the Royal Mail in the present bad condition:- Steps have been taken in the all the levels of the Organization to support the firm from the credit crunch and competition. To the workers:- Workers are provided with improved new range of training and guaranteed performance related pays. The employees who are considered as a valuable assets in the Royal Mail were provided with revised employee policies and procedures and long term job security and motivation. In order to improve its reputation and to obtain a good employee- employer relationship some additional steps were also taken. They are:- The new plan for temporary redundancy and early retirement are going to be enforced as soon as possible. Existing contracts will be renewed and new standardized contracts will be provided to the employees. The introduction of new machinery and techniques helps the workers to achieve world class standard in performance. The new revised Pension scheme plans are going to implement for those employees in the Royal Mail pension scheme. The working hours, the minimum wages are also revised. The safety of the staffs are taken in great consideration. Improved working conditions, first aid facilities, stress relief exercises, changing their job tasks over a period of time, self appraisal process, promotional and increments are also introduced to the new plan. To the firm:- The modernization of the firm with improved customer service support is the main objective of the firm. The co-operation of the Management with the workers and the trade union added with signing an agreement in new policies and procedures of the firm supported by the trade union is going to happen.
